Men's Soccer cruises past St. Mary

Box Score

The men's soccer team created another winning streak by beating the Spires from the University of St. Mary on Friday afternoon 4-0. After a road win against Providence College the Panthers had a tough battle against USM to keep on the winning side of things.

York took control of the game after Juan Flores (SO/Dickinson, Texas) scored the game winning goal in the 37th minute. Just four minutes later Job Yapp (SO/Lincoln, Neb) found Eric Runions (SR/Wilmington, Ill) to give the Panthers a 2-0 lead going into the half.

Yapp capitalized on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the penalty area in the 68th minute. After a great through ball on the left side Yapp beat a defender before being taken down hard and awarded the penalty. With just under 12 minutes to play Austin Kelly (FR/Oklahoma City, Okla) scored off a ball driven to him by Michael Ortiz (SR/Forney, Texas).

The Panthers pressured the Spires all afternoon and had several chances to score. York outshot the Spires 19 to 12.

The turning point was in the 28th minute when Ighor Tavares (JR/Joinvile, Brazil) blocked a penalty kick to give the Panthers some much needed momentum. As the Panthers seemed to be struggling a little defensively the save by Tavares sparked energy in the back line and Flores captialized on the offensive end. Tavares ended the day with 6 saves and his 2nd shutout of the year.

The Panthers improved to 4-2 on the season and will travel to Kansas next weekend for back to back games.
