Volleyball: Panthers fight hard in season opener but Lancers take the match

Box Score

YORK - York College was excited to get back onto the court after a lengthy preseason. The Panthers hosted Mount Marty in their first match of the season and fell 20-25, 21-25, 14-25. York fought hard in their opening match but Mount Marty's eight previous matches showed a little more consistency throughout the night.

York fought back in both the first and second games before falling at the end. The Panthers were down in the second set 12-19 before the Lancers took a timeout. York continued their comeback effort as they fought back to within two points at 21-23 with back-to-back kills by Shiloh Lively (JR/Las Vegas, Nev). However, that was all the Panthers could score in the game as they fell 21-25.

The final game of the match was all Lancers as they jumped out to a 14-5 lead.

York was led offensively by Brooke Winquist (JR/Long Beach, Cali) and Lively. Each were credited with six kills on the night. Felicity So'oto (JR/Oceanside, Calif) tallied 10 assists, while Finehika Uhatafe (JR/Bedford, Texas) added nine. Naomi Warren (SR/Fort Worth, Texas) was strong defensively as she tallied 14 digs. Alexandra Stoyanov (JR/Nashville, Tenn) had a big presence in the middle as she picked up four blocks and added three kills.

The Panthers travel to Yankton, S.D. for a rematch with the Lancers on Saturday. The match is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
