Panthers dominate second half in win over Coyotes

Box Score

YORK - York scored four times in the final 45 minutes of play to secure a 5-1 win against Kansas Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon. Nathan Lira scored two goals in the win and Otavio Avila assisted on three of the goals. The Panthers controlled possession for almost the entire 90 minutes of play but struggled to put the ball in the back of the ent in the first 45 minutes.

Nathan Lira scored just 14 minutes into the game as Otavio Avila crossed a ball into the middle of the penalty area and Johan Rodriguez dished across the goal to Lira. Lira made no doubt as he pushed the shot against the momentum of the Coyotes goalkeeper.

Even with the possession being on the side of the Panthers were unable to put another score on the board in the first half. Opportunities were there but no shots were threatening as the Coyotes battled strong. In the 39th minute, the Coyotes used a counter-attack to tie the game at 1-1. A long pass down the left side had the Panthers out of position and then a quick move and pass across the middle allowed the goal to be scored.

The Panthers were not about to have another tie go on their record however, York currently has three ties on the season, and York converted 11 shots into four goals in the final 45 minutes. It took just three minutes for Sebastian Sanhueza to score the game-winner after several ricochets put the ball at his feet.

Rogriguez scored his team-high sixth goal of the season on a pass from Avila in the 54th minute of play. Less than two minutes later the Panthers were cruising as Avila found Lira once again to push the lead to three at 4-1. As the substitutions began to flow over the final 15 minutes of play it was Gabriel Soltero getting in the books as he scored in the 80th minute.

Matej Hron picked up the win for the Panthers as he also added three saves to his sheet.

York improves to 4-4-3 on the season and will travel to Ottawa University on Wednesday.
