Panthers sweep Warriors in front of Homecoming crowd

Box Score

YORK - York University made the best of their time on the court Saturday in front of the Homecoming crowd as they swept the Sterling College Warriors 25-23, 25-20, 25-21. Danielle Armendariz and Jasmine Scarbrough led the Panthers with 10 kills each.

York fell behind early in the first game trailing 14-11. A quick timeout proved beneficial as the Panthers cut the lead to just one after a service error and a kill by Scarbrough. The game continued to go back and forth until the Panthers took the lead 20-19 on a kill by Brooke Halterman. After another kill by Scarbrough, the Panthers went up by one due to back-to-back attacking errors on the Warriors. Scarbrough finished the game with a kill that painted the back line.

In game two the Panthers once again had to battle back from a three-point deficit at 10-7. York once again went on a run thanks to Scarbrough and Amanda Macias' service ace. Halterman added another kill to her resume as the Panthers took a 21-17 lead. Kenna Tarnowski and Armendariz ended the game with kills to give the Panthers a five-point win.

In the final game of the match, the Panthers' defense was able to keep the Warriors' offense at bay as they committed back-to-back attack errors to push York's lead to 15-12. A service ace by Cassie Richardson gave the Panthers a 17-14 lead and then Tarnowski took over at the net with two huge blocks to give York a 20-16 lead.

Aubrey Bostick got in on the action as Shelby Fronk set her twice to put the Panthers within one point of the sweep at 24-19. The Warriors tried to get back into the match scoring two points before Tarnowski finished them off with a kill.

Halterman ended the night with eight kills and Bostick finished with seven. Shelby Fronk led the team with 23 assists while Darby Wright added 16. Alexandria Garcia led the Panthers in the back row as she finished with a team-high 18 digs. Scarbrough added 17, while Wright finished with 11.

The win was York's first conference win of the year and also their first sweep of the season. The Panthers will travel to Ottawa to take on the Braves on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
