York University Women's Soccer headed to McPherson Wednesday evening seeking to continue their push for a first KCAC playoff berth in three seasons.
Competition for those eight spots is fierce, so the Panthers knew they had to come to McPherson College and make a statement. And they did just that off the back of four first half goals.
Sofia Villa Monterd got things up and running in the 12th minute. After being fouled just outside the area, Sofia dusted herself down and steered the resulting free kick over the wall and into the top corner.
Gracie Reynolds then added to the lead when she picked up a pass from Rieke Wolff in midfield. She drove at a retreating Bulldog backline before calmly passing the ball into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 in the 24th minute.
Not to be outdone by Sofia in the free kick department, Lucía Tornero unleashed another set piece, this time from 30 yards out, that flew past the McPherson keeper before she had time to react. That made it 3-0 after 33 minutes.
York would come in at half time 4-0 up when some neat interplay between Lucía Tornero and Marilyn Silos presented a glorious shooting chance for Maisie Briscoe just outside the Bulldog box; Maisie obliged, and sent another aerial strike fizzing past the keeper to make things comfortable for the Panthers.
In the second half, York was able to get valuable minutes for the whole roster and some invaluable rest for some starters, who have three games left to secure a spot in the KCAC playoffs.
The Panthers were able to add a fifth to put the icing on the cake in the 68th minute. Gracie Reynolds, once again, drove at a tiring McPherson rearguard and slipped a neat through ball to Cleo Paris, who finished first time into the bottom corner to round off a superb evening for York.
The Panthers outshot the Bulldogs by 19-5, and 12-3 in shots on target. Harumi Cornejo was credited with 2 saves and the shutout in the win. The result puts York at 5-7-2 overall and 4-4-2 in KCAC play.
Up next for the Panthers is a key showdown at Southwestern this Saturday, Oct. 21st with kickoff at 5:30pm.
