Panthers Tie Tabor, Set Up Showdown with Evangel

YORK -
When you take two possession teams, add some terrible weather conditions, and sprinkle in a rough playing surface, the result is usually a game full of tackles and mistakes. This was the scenario that played out Wednesday afternoon in York, where two quality teams had to endure adverse conditions with KCAC playoff rankings on the line.

As the game started, both teams struggled to possess the ball, with the greasy surface wreaking havoc on first touches and the weight of attempted passes. Despite the conditions, both teams were able to fashion chances in the early sparring. First, a through pass allowed Tabor a one-on-one opportunity, but Harumi Cornejo came up with a huge stop to keep the scores at 0-0.

Next, it was York's turn to create a glorious scoring chance. A neat passing move saw a through pass find its way to Marilyn Silos in the box, but the Tabor keeper made a wonderful point-blank save to deny York the lead.

When the first goal came, it was the Bluejays of Tabor who struck first, albeit with the goal scorer unaware of her achievement! A corner kick floated into the box and hit a Tabor attacker in the back of the head before nestling in the corner of the net for a 1-0 Tabor lead in the 35th minute.

York replied less than three minutes later. The Panthers finally started connecting passes in their attacking third, and Gracie Reynolds dispatched a sweet strike into the bottom corner to restore parity heading into the break.

In the second half, both teams nullified each other, and the game became a midfield battle with few scoring chances created to find a priceless winning goal. York and Tabor played out the stalemate and the game finished 1-1.

The Bluejays outshot the Panthers 12-8 and 9-6 in shots on target.

The result means that York must win against Evangel for a shot at the KCAC playoffs on Senior Day. Kickoff vs. the Valor is 12pm on Saturday, October 28th.
