York University Women's Soccer overcame a sluggish start to claim a deserved home victory over Bethany College.
York took a while to find their rhythm, but were able to get on the board in the 7th minute after a through ball from Rieke Wolff found Gracie Reynolds, who found the back of the net with a left-footed strike via the post and a ricochet off of the Bethany keeper.Â
York's lead was immediately expunged as Bethany sent a long ball from the ensuing kickoff that evaded the Panther defense and Bethany were able to restore parity at 1-1.
York regained their composure in the following minutes and dominated possession, creating more chances to retake the lead. The go-ahead goal came on 24 minutes after a foul right outside the Bethany box. Gracie Reynolds stepped up and guided the free kick over the wall and into the top corner for her second goal of the day.
The Panthers extended their lead in the 32nd minutes after some neat combination play by Lucia Tornero and Sofia Villa Monterd sent Gracie Reynolds through on goal. She lifted the ball over the onrushing Bethany keeper with her left foot to complete her hat-trick and give York a 3-1, which they took into half-time.
The second half followed a similar theme to the first: a lot of possession and chances for York with Bethany looking to counter-attack. The Panthers also made many changes in personnel in the second period, and it was one of the substitutes who put York 4-1 ahead. In the 82nd minute, Mia Bates followed in a through ball into the Bethany box, and as the ball broke loose from the Bethany keeper, Mia was on hand to score her first collegiate goal.
The Panthers quickly added their fifth and final goal of the evening. Straight from Bethany's kickoff, York regained possession and Gracie Reynolds drove at the Bethany defense before placing a low right-footed drive into the bottom corner for her fourth goal of the game.
York outshot Bethany 23-8 and 12-4 in shots on target. The Panthers travel to Bartlesville, Oklahoma this Saturday, October 7th for a matchup with the Eagles of Oklahoma Wesleyan University. The Eagles are currently ranked 9th in the NAIA. Kickoff is 1pm.
