York traveled to Lincoln this past Tuesday seeking a first win of the 2023 campaign after two close losses to top GPAC teams in Concordia and Midland. They took on a talented Nebraska Wesleyan team, who came into the contest 1-1 after a trip to Illinois.
In their first two games of the season, York demonstrated a lot of defensive organization and hard work. Against Nebraska Wesleyan, they were able to add more offensive possession and scoring chances into their repertoire.Â
Taking the wind in the first half, York was able to control the majority of the play and territory, stringing together multiple passes in their opponent's half. However, neither team could find a breakthrough in the first 45 minutes, so scores were tied 0-0 at half.
Despite going against the breeze in the second half, York came out with a higher intensity, immediately creating better scoring opportunities, and it didn't take long for the game-winning goal to arrive. After winning possession in midfield, York worked the ball into
Gracie Reynolds, who was able to weight a precise through ball to
Cleo Paris. After using her first touch to set herself, Cleo calmly side-footed the ball beyond the onrushing keeper to give York a deserved lead after 49 minutes.
As time ticked away, both teams pushed for more goals; York looked to extend their lead, while NWU were trying to draw level. York was able to survive a late push from Wesleyan and see out the 1-0 win. The result moves York to 1-2 ahead of their first home game against College of St. Mary this Saturday, Sept. 9th at 1pm at the Cornerstone Soccer Complex in York.
In summing things up, co-head coaches
Greg Reynolds and
Benny Hanaphy were happy with the progress being made thus far. "The girls worked hard and deserved the win. We are heading in the right direction on all fronts," stated Reynolds. Hanaphy added, "We fought hard tonight against a good opponent. We have a way to go to reach our full potential, but we are proud of the girls' effort so far this season."
