Panthers Drop Home Contest To Saint Mary

YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team lost an 81-57 contest to the University of Saint Mary Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 7-11 overall, including 5-7 in KCAC play.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by Jaden Henderson's team-best 16 points on six-of-14 shooting from the floor. He added three rebounds and two assists. Trevon Dennis reached double digits with 10 points. He added four boards, two blocks and two steals in 28 minutes of work. Cam Clardy chipped in eight markers, four rebounds and two assists.

Down 14-7, Salvador Fernandez tipped in a miss for a bucket. The Spires led 20-11 before Dennis buried a three-ball at the 5:32 mark. Henderson added a jumper 40 seconds later to pull within four, 20-16. The visitors held a 27-20 advantage but Clardy netted a pair of charity tosses to pull within five with 2:12 to go. A jumper by Henderson with 1:09 to go made it 29-24 at the break.

Clardy and Andrew Bennett hit jumpers in the first 68 seconds of the second half to pull within one, 29-28. Six straight points by the visitors pushed the score to 35-28. Clardy nailed a three-point play to pull within four but that was as close as the home team could get the rest of the way.

York made it a four-point score twice more, including at 42-38 when Clardy found Henderson for a three-point bucket at the 13:18 mark. However, USM embarked on an 8-0 spurt for a 50-38 score at the 11:08 mark.

A 16-2 spurt that spanned six minutes gave the Spires a 69-45 advantage with 4:32 to play.  York continued to battle throughout the contest. Henderson nailed a three-ball and Ryan Lenear hit a jumper at the 2:15 mark.

For the game, York hit 22-of-65 (33.8 percent) from the floor. The Panthers made six three-point shots. The squad secured 40 rebounds, including 15 on the offensive glass. Burks' team dished out seven assists and held a 14-8 edge in second-chance points.
