YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team opened the season with an emphatic 104-54 victory over Calvary University Friday evening.
The Panthers are now 1-0 on the year.
Head coach
Tree Burks' team was led by
Chris Dixon's game-high 19 points.
Kyane Taylor notched 16 points while
Devin Carroll contributed 12 markers.
Dave Dalge and
Andrew Bennett chipped in 12 points and 11 points, respectively.
Eli Nutting tallied nine points and
DJ Leaks added six in the win.
Carroll, Bennett and
Dylan Holston snagged game-high honors with eight rebounds apiece while
Carl Thorpe Jr. pulled down six.
Rhino Hernandez dished out six assists and Thorpe Jr. posted five assists.
Leading 11-7 in the early going, Leaks converted a lay-up. An
Andrew Bennett dunk off a pass from Thorpe Jr., extended the score to 15-7.
Rhino Hernandez found Dixon for a three-ball before a Dalge lay-up pushed the margin to 20-9. Up 20-11, York embarked on a 10-3 spurt for a 16-point advantage. The run was capped by
Kyane Taylor's three-point bucket off a pass from
Ikechukwu Nwaobi.
A 14-0 run by the Panthers made it 44-16 with 5:33 to play. The high-octane offense continued to score at will. The score stood at 53-25 with just under two minutes to play in the half and Dalge made another lay-up. He buried a jumper at the 1:34 mark before connecting on two free throws with just 75 seconds to go in the stanza, pushing the margin to 59-25. A Holston lay-up with 19 ticks to play off a pass from
Amari Haynes made it 61-26 at the break.
An 11-2 spurt in the early going of the second period extended the score to 77-37 after Nwaobi's shot at the 13:31 mark.
With the score at 96-49,
Garrett Johnson hit a lay-up off a pass from Joshua Schloss. With 3:27 to play,
Terrence Packer found Nutting for a three-point bucket, helping the squad surpass the 100-point plateau.
For the game, York hit 38-of-71 from the floor (53.5 percent), including 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) from downtown. The Panthers held a commanding 52-27 edge on the glass, including a 16-6 effort on the offensive boards.
Burks' team registered 52 points off the bench and the squad led for virtually the entire game. The Panthers forced 21 turnovers and converted the miscues into 27 points. York netted 44 points in the paint and the team had 17 second-chance points.
The Panthers return to action Tuesday, Oct. 29, when they play at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Tip-off is slated for 7:05 p.m.
