Panthers beat Lancers in nonconference matchup

YANKTON, S.D. – The York University men's basketball team posted a 71-67 win at Mount Marty Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 3-5 on the season, including 1-3 in KCAC action. The home squad fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.

York was led by Chris Dixon's 18 points and four rebounds. Carl Thorpe, Jr., added 15 points and eight rebounds to go along with four assists and two steals. Andrew Bennett narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and 12 rebounds.

York took a 9-4 lead in the early going after Dixon hit two free throws, capping a 5-0 spurt. Tied at 14-14, Rhino Hernandez found Carl Thorpe Jr., for a three-ball. Dave Dalge converted a lay-up for the five-point margin. Dixon and Dylan Holston canned shots from downtown for a 28-20 lead with 6:00 to play in the first half. Rhino Hernandez connected on a lay-up as time expired for a 39-32 edge at the break.

Trailing 53-50 with 11:00 to go, Thorpe Jr., found Holston for a shot from downtown. Dixon hit two free throws for a 55-53 edge with 9:59 to go.

The back-and-forth affair saw the home team maintain a 64-61 lead before Ikechukwu Nwaobi converted a lay-up with 4:32 to play. Neither team scored until Dixon canned a jumper with 1:59 remaining for a one-point margin. A dunk from Thorpe Jr., pushed the advantage to three, 67-64, with 54 ticks on the clock.

A lay-up from Thorpe, Jr., and a basket from Andrew Bennett extended the margin to six, 70-64.  

For the game, York hit 25-of-54 from the floor, including nine-of-27 from downtown. The team pulled down 37 boards, including 11 on the offensive glass. The Panthers had 28 points in the paint and York posted 10 second-chance points.
