CRETE, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team lost an 89-78 decision at Hastings Saturday evening.
The Panthers are now 1-2 on the season.
Trailing 22-12 with just over 10 minutes to play in the half,
Carl Thorpe Jr. buried a jumper off a pass from
Chris Dixon. Seconds later,
Dave Dalge found Dixon for a three-ball to make it 22-17. Dalge and
Dylan Holston connected on baskets, helping York pull within two at 24-22 at the 8:32 mark.
Down 29-25,
DJ Leaks hit two free throws and Dixon drained a jumper. The teams exchanged baskets. With 1:34 to play,
Andrew Bennett connected on a shot, but the home team rattled off the final five points for a 45-38 advantage at the break.
Hastings held a 64-47 lead with just over 10 minutes to go, but Dalge canned a shot from downtown off a pass from
Amari Haynes. A pair of free throws from Leaks and another jumper from Dalge trimmed the deficit to 64-54 with 9:09 to play.
Trailing 76-61,
Eli Nutting took a pass from
Rhino Hernandez and promptly found the bottom of the net from downtown, marking his second consecutive shot from distance. A Dixon three-ball trimmed the margin to 77-67 with 3:08 to play. A 4-0 spurt pulled the Panthers to within nine at 80-71 with 1:39 to go. York cut the deficit to six, 82-76, but that was as close as the squad could get.
Head coach
Tree Burks' team was paced by Dixon's 21 points. Leaks added 13 points while Thorpe Jr. added 12. Dalge contributed nine points and seven rebounds while Bennett chipped in eight markers.
For the game, York canned 28-of-62 (45.2 percent) from the floor, including nine-of-24 (37.5 percent) from the three-point stripe. The Panthers held a 32-31 edge on the glass, including a 10-3 margin on the offensive end. York dished out 13 assists and had 12 second-chance points.
