STERLING, Kan. – The York University men's basketball team picked up a hard-fought 94-85 win at Sterling Saturday afternoon in KCAC action.
The Panthers are now 9-15 overall, including 7-11 in league play after picking up back-to-back victories.
Head coach Tree Burk's team was led by
Jaden Henderson's 26-point, five-rebound effort.
Dwight Glover added 21 points and seven rebounds in the win.
Cam Clardy,
Andrew Bennett and
Trevon Dennis tallied nine points apiece.
Devin Carroll chipped in seven points and six rebounds while
Rhino Hernandez accounted for six points.
Devondre Mayfield had four points while
Jordan Marble added three markers.
In a back-and-forth affair, Glover's three-point play gave the visitors an 11-10 edge. Down 18-13, Dennis canned back-to-back three-point buckets. Trailing 24-21, Henderson hit a three-point shot and a jumper for a two-point edge, 26-24.
Leading 27-26, Marble and Carroll hit back-to-back three-point shots for a 33-26 advantage with 6:28 to play in the first half. Up 38-36, Clardy hit a lay-up and then made two free throws. Leading 42-38, Clardy's two charity tosses made it 44-38 at the break.
Glover's jumper extended the margin to 50-42 at the 17:58 mark. He hit a pair of free throws with 10:59 to play to go up nine, 61-52.
The home team cut the margin to just two, 63-61, before Hernandez drained a jumper. Bennett's two free throws made it a 67-61 contest at the 8:04 mark. Leading 67-63, Bennett netted three points and found Carroll a minute later for a three-point shot, extending the advantage to 10, 73-63.
With 2:27 to play, the home team cut the deficit to seven, but Henderson made a lay-up. A free throw by Henderson and two from Mayfield pushed the margin to eight, 86-74, with 1:44 to go.
York was fouled several times down the stretch but the team continued to hit its free throws, securing the victory.
For the game, the team was outstanding, hitting 28-of-56 from the floor, including eight-of-19 from downtown. The squad got to the charity stripe 33 times and hit 30 attempts (90.9 percent). Burks' team outrebounded the home squad 33-22, including a four-rebound edge on the offensive glass. The nine offensive boards led to 15 second-chance points for York.
