York Drops Doubleheader On Friday

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The York University softball team lost a pair of games Friday afternoon. The team dropped a 4-3 contest to Dakota Wesleyan before falling 11-3 to Dordt.

The Panthers are now 1-7 on the young season.

In the first game of the day, York broke the scoreless tie in the frame. With one away, Breanna Underwood bunted her way onto base. A groundout pushed her to second base and she scored on a base hit by Nevaeh Reed to center field to make it 1-0.

Dakota Wesleyan answered with four runs in the bottom of the stanza to make it 4-1. However, the Panthers put the pressure on the designated home team in the seventh. Sariah Ayala drew a lead-off walk and moved to second on Underwood's single to left field. An error allowed Paige Chapman to reach base, loading the bags. Reed's base knock drove in Ayala and a sacrifice fly by Kennedie Anderson sliced the deficit to one as Chapman scored. York was unable to push across the tying run in the frame.

For the game, Chapman, Kayla Noelker and Underwood had three hits apiece. Reed tallied two hits and led the way with two RBI.

In the circle, Bailey Hardey worked six innings and had a strikeout. She gave up four runs on six hits in the loss.

In the nightcap against Dordt, the designated visitors plated two runs in the second, one the second and two in the third for a 5-0 lead. However, the Panthers battled back in their at bat.

Gracie Torstensen started things off with a single to left field. She moved to second on a Katie Taylor infield hit and scored on Ayala's double to center field. Underwood followed her up with a base knock to the outfield, plating Taylor.

Dordt responded with five runs in the fourth to make it 10-2. Down 11-2 in the fifth, Ayala recorded a one-out single and went to second on a walk to Underwood. After a single by Chapman, Anderson drove in Ayala with a base hit to left field for the 11-3 final.

For the game, Ayala and Chapman had two hits apiece. Ayala recorded a double, had one RBI and scored once.

In the circle, Kaitlyn Roe went 3.1 innings and had two strikeouts. Malia Alvarez worked the rest of the contest. She had a strikeout in 1.2 frames.
