KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University softball team lost both games of the doubleheader at Avila Sunday by scores of 9-0 and 14-6.
The Panthers are now 3-17 overall and 1-3 in KCAC action.
In game one, York trailed 6-0 after the first inning. The Eagles scored a run in the second and two in the third frame for the 9-0 lead.
The Panthers were unable to plate a run in the opener. The squad had a pair of hits in the game – the first of which came off the bat of
Sofia Perez in the second inning. Perez blasted a single to center field to lead things off. However, she was erased on a fielder's choice two batters later. Neveah Reed walked, putting runners on first and second, but a strike out ended the inning.
In the third,
Katie Taylor was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a groundout. After hustling to third on another ground ball, a line drive ended the stanza.
Sariah Ayala recorded a one-out single in the fourth inning, but she was out at second on a fielder's choice.
In the circle,
Bailey Hardey went the distance. She gave up nine runs, seven of which were earned. Hardey had a pair of strikeouts in the contest.
York loaded the bases in the top of the first in game two. Ayala recorded a walk, pushing across
Paige Chapman for a 1-0 lead. The Panthers were unable to tally another run in the frame.
Avila plated three runs in the first and one in the second for a 4-1 advantage, but the visitors battled back. In the top of the third,
Breanna Underwood walked and moved to second on a groundout. A throwing error allowed her to race home, pulling the Panthers within two at 4-2.
Int the fourth, York had one runner on. After back-to-back outs,
Kennedie Anderson singled. After a walk to Underwood loaded the bases, Perez blasted a grand slam over the left field fence for a 6-4 advantage.
Avila answered with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good. The home squad pushed across a run in the fifth and four in the sixth for the run-rule victory.
For the game, Anderson and Perez registered hits in the loss. Perez garnered four RBI on the grand slam. Underwood scored twice.
In the circle, Hardey had two strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work.
Malia Alvarez worked the final two-thirds of an inning.
