Panthers lose home opener against Kansas Wesleyan

YORK, Neb. – The York University baseball team lost both games of a doubleheader to Kansas Wesleyan Thursday afternoon.

Game scores were 13-11 and 14-8 in the nightcap.

The Panthers are now 10-18 overall, including 2-13 in KCAC action. The Coytes stand at 20-7 on the year and 13-4 in league play.

York took a quick 2-0 lead in the second inning. After a base hit by Daniel Polo, Ryan Romero belted a two-run round-tripper for the early advantage.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth, Nicholas DeMonte got things going with a base hit to left field. Cameron Reeve was hit by a pitch and Austin Grant laid down a bunt single to load the bags. Secundino Morales blasted an offering over the wall for a grand slam, giving the Panthers a 6-3 lead.

After a pitching change, Polo singled and hustled to third on a base knock from Romero. Ian Heck was hit by a pitch, once again loading the bases. Two batters later, DeMonte ripped a single right back up the middle, knocking in two for an 8-3 margin. 

Up 8-7 in the seventh, York's offense went back to work. Romero walked and stole second base. Two batters later, DeMonte belted a single to right field, driving in Romero for a two-run advantage.

Kansas Wesleyan scored three runs in the ninth for a 10-9 lead, but York would continue to battle. With two away, Heck singled to center field. Connor Larson came in as a pinch runner and moved to second when Trevor Peterson drew a walk. DeMonte earned a base on balls to load the bases.

After a pitching change, a wild pitch allowed Larson to race home, knotting the score at 10-10.   

After a three-run 10th inning by the visitors, the Panthers managed to push across one run in the bottom of the frame on an unearned run, but it was not enough.

For the game, DeMonte led the way with four hits and three RBI. Morales posted two hits, four RBI and scored twice. Polo and Romero had two hits apiece. Romero drove in two and scored three times while Polo crossed home twice.

On the mound, James McCown got the start and went five innings. He struck out seven in the game. Cole Doebel had three strikeouts while Ruben Colliander had two. James Mockry worked the 10th inning.

York jumped on the board early and often in game two. The Panthers scored two in the first and three in the second for a 5-0 advantage. After Grant singled, Cesar Galvan belted a two-run homer for a quick lead. DeMonte led off the second with a double to left field. After Peyton Pinedo came in as a pinch runner, Reeve pushed him to third on a sacrifice bunt. Grant singled in Pinedo for a three-run margin. Morales walked and Galvan's infield single plated Grant. Polo lifted a sacrifice fly, allowing Morales to race home for a five-run lead.

Up 5-1, Heck drew a lead-off walk in the third. Larson reached on a throwing error, which allowed Isaac Stark and Larson to cross home plate.  

The Coyotes scored a run in the fourth, two in the sixth and 10 in the seventh for a 14-7 lead. DeMonte crushed a solo home run in the bottom of the inning, but it was not enough.

For the game, Galvan led the way with two hits and three RBI. DeMonte posted two hits and one RBI while Grant scored twice. Galvan and DeMonte each hit round-trippers.  

On the mound, Heck worked 5.2 innings and had seven strikeouts. Owen McClung worked two-thirds of an inning. Marce Vasquez and Dalton Juden each saw time on the mound. Juden had a pair of strikeouts in the contest.
