Panthers finish season with split at Sterling

STERLING, Kan. – The York University softball team concluded the season with a doubleheader split at Sterling College on Tuesday.

York lost the first game 7-1 before picking up a come-from-behind 5-4 win in the nightcap.

The Panthers conclude the season with a ledger of 7-35, including 5-21 in KCAC action.

Head coach Aaron Alvarez's team trailed 5-0 after the third inning as Sterling plated three runs in the first and two in the third.

York got on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Kennedie Anderson doubled to the gap in right center field and Sofia Perez drew a walk. Kayla Noelker ripped a single up the middle, knocking in Anderson.

The Warriors got the run back in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on the final run of the game in the sixth.

The Panthers registered base hits from Anderson, Noelker and Katie Taylor.

In the circle, Malia Alvarez went the distance. She had a strikeout in six innings of work.

Game two saw the home team take a 3-0 lead before York knotted the game in the bottom of the third. Breanna Underwood reached on a fielder's choice and moved to second on Sariah Ayala's base hit up the middle. Anderson's infield hit plated Underwood and Sofia Perez roped a two-RBI double to the gap in left center field, tying the game.

Trailing 4-3 in the fifth, Ayala doubled down the left field line and scored on Anderson's double. York took the lead in the sixth. Noelker singled and Gracie Torstensen entered as a pinch runner. She moved to second on Tricia Trice's base hit up the middle. After each runner moved up on a grounder, Torstensen raced home when Taylor reached on an error for the one-run advantage, 5-4.

That proved to be the game-winning run for York as Faith Torstensen went the distance for the complete-game victory. She gave up four runs, but only two were earned.

For the game, Ayala recorded three hits, including a double, while scoring twice. Anderson recorded two hits, including a double, and scored. Perez garnered a double and drove in two.
