Panthers Cruise Past Warriors In 3-0 Sweep

YORK, Neb. – The York University volleyball team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Calvary University Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 2-1 on the season.

For the match, Liberty Baker and Aubrey Bostick led the way with eight kills apiece. Avery Schneider chipped in seven kills in the victory.

Mariah Janda dished out 18 assists while Kensey Clifton added 10 assists. Amanda Macias and Ambar Ortiz chipped in three aces apiece. Schneider accounted for two aces.

Defensively, Valentina Jimenez garnered 13 digs while Ortiz notched 10.

In the first set, York led 2-1 but a service error gave the home team a two-point edge. Two more attack errors by the visitors pushed the score to 5-1. Up 8-5, two errors by the visitors made it 10-5. Then, Baker slammed home a kill as did Emma Kerley. An error by Calvary and an ace by Amanda Macias pushed the advantage to 14-5. Moments later, another ace gave York a 16-5 lead.

The Panthers led 17-10 before Kaylee Weigel started a run. She had a kill and three straight miscues by Calvary put the score at 21-10. Schnieder added a point. Two plays later, Weigel slammed home a kill. After a point by the visitors, a service error ended the frame at 25-11.

York maintained a 7-5 lead in the second set and a service error pushed the margin to three. Schneider registered another kill for a 9-5 advantage. Up 9-7, Aubrey Bostick and Kerley notched kills before Ortiz served up an ace. Leading 12-8, Weigel had a kill. An error and kills from Baker and Bostick extended the margin to eight, 16-8.

Up 17-9, Baker and Weigel garnered kills. An ace made it 21-9. The Warriors pulled within seven at 23-16, but Schnieder recorded two kills in three plays for the eight-point victory.   

In the third frame, York led 5-2 and rattled off an 11-0 spurt, putting the contest away. Schneider completed the run with a spectacular ace. Up 16-5, Bostick garnered a kill and Megan Burdge split the defense with an ace. Ortiz added two aces before Ronan Merriex pushed the margin to 18, 24-6 en route to the win.

The Panthers return to action Friday, Aug. 30, when they take on Dakota State in the first match of the Siouxland Invitational starting at 11 a.m. The squad will also play Hasketll Indian Nations University at 6:30 p.m. Live stats will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
