Eagles too strong for Panthers in KCAC matchup

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The York University men's basketball team lost an 84-69 decision at Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 4-13 on the year, including 1-11 in KCAC action.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by Chris Dixon's game-high 28 points. Carl Thorpe Jr., added 14 points while Devin Carroll tallied nine points. Dave Dalge contributed eight points while Andrew Bennett notched six points and six boards. Dylan Holston chipped in four points and a pair of assists. Rhino Hernandez and Amari Haynes shared team-high honors with three assists apiece.

Down 7-2 in the early going, Thorpe Jr., found Carroll for a three-ball at the 16:59 mark. Moments later, Thorpe Jr., canned his own shot from distance to make it 14-8. Trailing 29-11, Dixon found Holston for a lay-up. Dalge hit two free throws at the 7:27 mark to pull within 14 at 29-15. Dalge canned a charity toss with 7:27 to play.

After Dixon converted a lay-up, Dalge found the bottom of the net on two more free throws to pull within 10, 29-19. Dixon cut the deficit to nine on a three-point shot, but the home team went on a 7-0 spurt en route to a 39-25 lead at halftime.

Oklahoma Wesleyan held a 53-29 lead before Thorpe Jr., started a run with a three-ball. Bennett threw down a thunderous dunk before Dixon canned another shot from deep. A pair of inside shots from Dalge allowed the Panthers to claw within 12, 53-41, with 13:32 to go.

The teams traded baskets, but York was unable to slice the deficit to cut the margin under 10 points. Down 74-54, Thorpe Jr., made a lay-up. Hernandez dished out a pair of assists on Dixon three-point buckets, but that was as close as the visitors could get the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 25-of-64 from the floor, including 11-of-31 from the three-point stripe. The Panthers converted all eight charity tosses. York pulled down 21 rebounds. The squad distributed 13 assists and got 32 points off the bench.
