WINFIELD, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team knocked off Southwestern by an 80-62 score Friday evening.
The Panthers are now 3-8 on the year, including 1-7 in KCAC action.
York was led by
Destiny Shepherd's game-high 25 points. She also tallied six boards and four assists.
Ashley Rubio added 12 points, four boards and a block while
Pasiko Hvichiani tallied a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. She also added a pair of steals.
Britney Schroer narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while distributing a game-best seven assists. She did it all, blocking two shots and adding a steal.
Alyssa Civitak had six points while
Olivia Shannon and
Monique Contreras added five points apiece.
Clara Romero and
Alliyana Page netted four points apiece.
The Panthers jumped out to an 11-point lead after the first quarter and never looked back. York outscored the home team by three points in the second and four more in the third frame.
Hvichiani started things off with a three-ball while Schroer added a pair of free throws. A jumper by Rubio and another free throw for Schroer made it 8-0. Leading 10-4, Contreras canned a shot from downtown as did Shannon for a 12-point margin. Civitak's shot from distance made it 24-10 with 1:10 to go in the quarter.
York embarked on a run in the second period. Schroer's shot pushed the lead to 14, 29-15. Shepherd hit two free throws and Hvichiani made one for a 32-15 advantage. The Panthers extended the lead to 18 on Page's shot with 1:59 to play en route to a 42-27 margin at the break.
Rubio made it 48-28 with 8:02 to play in the third quarter off a pass from Hvichiani. Her shot in the lane allowed the visitors to take a 62-38 lead at the 2:03 mark. The home squad pulled within 19 at the buzzer with the score at 66-47.
Shepherd's three-point bucket off a pass from Romero at the 9:01 mark of the final stanza gave the Panthers a 72-47 lead. Southwestern cut the margin to 17, but York did not allow the team to get any closer the rest of the way.
For the game, York hit 29-of-60 from the floor, including nine-of-19 from downtown. The squad scored 26 points in the paint, had 17 points off turnovers and added 15 second-chance points.
