YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team cruised to a 100-47 victory over Kansas Christian College Thursday evening.
The Panthers are now 2-1 on the season.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Zoe Brown and
Destiny Shepherd as each netted 20 points.
Sylvia Valentino added 18 points while
Lawson Hiltl,
Alesia Rand and
Monique Contreras added seven points apiece.
Amaya Payne had six points while
Valeria Costilla chipped in five markers.
Payne led the way with eight boards while Brown and Rand had six and five, respectively. Costilla dished out five assists while Shepherd and
Lauren Perez shared honors with four steals each. Contreras, Costilla and Hiltl had three steals each. Brown swatted a pair of shots.
York jumped out to a 27-7 lead after the first quarter and opened up a 58-17 lead at the break.
Valentino opened the game with a three-point play. Shepherd converted a lay-up and free throw at the 9:05 mark for a 6-0 edge. Four more points by Shepherd pushed the margin to 10-0 and the team never looked back. A 13-0 spurt by the Panthers extended the advantage to 27-5 with 16 ticks on the clock in the first frame. Valentino had six points during the spurt while Rand added five straight points.
Up 31-11, Brown nailed a jumper. Payne converted a lay-up before Brown took a pass from
Alliyana Page for a three-point shot. Shepherd added five more points while Brown and
Olivia Adams had three and two, respectively, during the spurt, which pushed the lead to 48-11 at the 5:32 mark of the half. Holding a 48-13 edge, Contreras buried a three-ball and a lay-up. Costilla hit a shot from distance and Hilti's lay-up put the score at 58-13.
Brown converted a late lay-up and Hiltl took a pass from Brown for another bucket from downtown for a 76-28 margin with 1:16 to play in the third stanza.
York posted 10 points in the final 2:26, reaching the 100-point plateau. Valentino netted the team's final five points, including a three-ball, over the final 33 seconds for the 100
th point of the evening for the squad.
For the game, the Panthers were hot from the floor, draining 38-of-75 (50.7 percent), including 11-of-29 (37.9 percent) from downtown. York held a 45-30 edge in rebounds, including an 18-9 edge on the offensive glass. Minjarez's team dished out 23 assists and scored 47 points off 30 turnovers. The team also got 38 points off the bench and the team recorded 19 second-chance points. York had 21 steals and four blocks in the victory.
The Panthers return to action Monday when they play an exhibition at the University of South Dakota at 5 p.m.
