Baseball splits with Panhandle State after offense exploded in game one on Saturday

GOODWELL, Okla. – The York University baseball team split a pair of games at Oklahoma Panhandle State Saturday, winning the first game 15-1 before falling 7-3 in the nightcap.

The Panthers are now 2-2 on the season.

In game one, York jumped out to an early 1-0 advantage in the first frame. Austin Grant reached on an error and scored when Ian Heck singled for the one-run margin. The score remained the same until the third stanza. Cameron Reeve was hit by a pitch and trotted to second when Nicholas DeMonte reached on an error. A walk to Grant loaded the bags and Heck delivered a single, driving in Reeve.

Two batters later, Trevor Peterson walked to drive in a run. Ryan Romero doubled home two more Panthers for a 5-0 lead. With the bases still loaded, Connor Larson was hit by a pitch, pushing the margin to 6-0.

Up 6-1 in the fifth, Romero singled and swiped second. After moving to third on a passed ball, Kodai Namba drew a walk. Two batters later, Reeve doubled both teammates home for an 8-1 lead. DeMonte singled in Reeve, extending the advantage to eight.

York added to the advantage in the seventh when Grant was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Heck doubled home everyone for a 13-1 advantage. A Marek Stone double to right field pushed across two more runs.

Heck led the way with three hits and five RBI. Peterson and Romero had two hits apiece. Romero, Reeve and Stone had two RBI apiece. Grant led the team with three runs scored.

Cole Doebele worked 4.1 innings and had eight strikeouts. Sam Maudsley tossed the final 2.2 frames. He had a pair of strikeouts.

In game two, York trailed 4-0 after the first inning. In the third stanza, the Panthers pushed across three runs to make it a one-run game.

Reeve started things off with a single and moved to second on DeMonte's hit. With one down, Heck doubled both runners home. Two batters later, Romero doubled in Heck. However, that was as close as the Panthers would get.

OPSU added two runs in the fourth and an insurance run in the sixth. Heck recorded a one-out single in the seventh, but the visitors were unable to push across any runs.

For the game, Heck led the offense with three hits, two RBI and a run scored. Martin added two hits in the loss.
