Panthers fall in season finale against Bethel

YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team lost a 95-71 decision to Bethel Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers conclude the 2024-25 season with a record of 7-20, including 4-18 in KCAC action

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by a 22-point effort from DJ Leaks. Carl Thorpe Jr., posted 14 points to go along with seven rebounds. Chris Dixon tallied 11 points while Dylan Holston notched nine points and six boards. Rhino Hernandez accounted for six points and three steals. Andrew Bennett added four points and seven rebounds while Devin Carroll and Dave Dalge chipped in three points and two points, respectively.

For the game, York hit 23-of-63 from the floor, including 10-of-27 from downtown. The squad was automatic from the charity stripe, burying all 15 attempts. York pulled down 39 rebounds, including 15 on the offensive glass. The team dished out 12 assists and totaled 14 second-chance points. The home team also netted 24 points in the paint.

Hernandez and Thorpe Jr., buried back-to-back three-point buckets in the early going for a 6-4 advantage. It marked the team's lone lead of the game.

Leaks hit two free throws at the 16:14 mark to knot the score at 8-8. Moments later, Bennette's lay-up tied the game at 10-10.

Down 15-12, Leaks hit a pair of charity tosses to pull within one. Bethel went on a 15-1 spurt to take a 36-22 lead and maintained a 51-36 margin at the break.

Trailing 58-40, Leaks hit two free throws before Thorpe Jr., netted three consecutive points. Another basket from Leaks made it 58-47 with 15:38 to play. With just over 14 minutes to play, Leaks canned a three-ball. A 5-0 spurt, including three points by Thorpe Jr., pulled York within seven at 65-58 at the 13:09 mark. However, that was as close as they could get the rest of the way.
