SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The York University men's basketball team lost a 98-83 contest at Evangel Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 7-16 overall, including 4-14 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Tree Burks' team was led by
Carl Thorpe Jr.'s 15-point effort.
Chris Dixon added 14 points while
DJ Leaks and
Amari Haynes had 12 and 10, respectively.
Down 19-14 at the 12:54 mark,
Dylan Holston converted a lay-up, starting a spurt. Dixon nailed a three-ball before Thorpe Jr., nailed a jumper with 10:08 to play for a 21-19 advantage.
The back-and-forth affair saw the home team go up 31-28 before Dixon and Holston made lay-ups, giving the visitors a 32-31 lead at the 3:59 mark.
Down 33-32, Thorpe Jr., drilled a three-ball for a two-point margin. With the score at 36-35 in favor of the Valor, Thorpe Jr., made a lay-up. Leaks canned two free throws at the 2:24 mark for a 39-36 edge. A late dunk by Dixon knotted the score at 43-43, but Evangel made a three-ball for a 46-43 halftime advantage.
The Valor managed to take a 14-point lead at the 13:37 mark, but York pulled within nine on an old-fashioned three-point play by Amarie Haynes. Down 69-57, Haynes converted a lay-up.
Dave Dalge hit an inside bucket before Thorpe Jr, scored on the break, closing the gap to 69-63 with 10:23 to go.
Trailing by eight, 71-63,
Rhino Hernandez hit a lay-up. Thorpe Jr., hit a pair of free throws, slicing the deficit to just four, 71-67. However, Evangel extended the margin to 10 at the 6:15 mark.
York was unable to get any closer than eight the rest of the way.
For the game, York hit 30-of-55 from the floor, including five-of-17 from downtown. The squad buried 18-of-27 from the charity stripe. The Panthers snagged 36 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive boards. The visitors also dished out 17 assists on 30 field goals.
