Comeback bid falls short against top-seeded Eagles

JOPLIN, Mo. – The York University baseball team dropped a 6-5 contest to top-seeded Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers conclude the season with a record of 25-23.

York broke the scoreless contest in the second inning as Ryan Romero belted a lead-off home run over the left field wall for a 1-0 advantage.

The Panthers extended the margin to 2-0 in the third. With one down, Nicholas DeMonte was hit by a pitch and took second on a groundout. Ian Heck roped an offering into center field and DeMonte hustled home for a two-run cushion.

Tied at 2-2 in the fourth, Trever Peterson launched a lead-off home run over the right field wall for a 3-2 edge.

In the fifth, Cesar Galvan recorded a one-out single to right field, but a fielder's choice erased him. A walk to Sam Hodoly put Romero on second base. After a base on balls to Peterson, Austin Grant drew a bases loaded walk, pushing in Romero for a 4-2 margin.

Oklahoma Wesleyan scored four runs in the fifth for a 6-4 advantage.

In the eighth, Cameron Reeve tallied a lead-off single. DeMonte garnered a base hit to right center field, which sent Reeve to third. Two batters later, Heck got ahold of a pitch and sent it into left center field, knocking in Reeve to pull within one at 6-5.

York had the tying and go-ahead runs on in the ninth, but the squad was unable to push across any more runs.

For the game, Heck led the way with three hits, including a double. He had a pair of RBI. DeMonte, Galvin, Grant and Peterson had two hits apiece. Peterson and Romero had home runs. Romero drove in two in the loss.

On the mound, Bryce Woodard got the start and tossed four innings. He gave up five runs on eight hits and had a strikeout. Ruben Colliander worked a frame and had two strikeouts before Elvin Ramos entered the contest. He tossed three innings and had four strikeouts.
