Women's Basketball: Panthers slow start too much to overcome against Eagles

YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team lost a 71-59 decision to Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 6-13 on the year, including 1-11 in KCAC action.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was paced by Destiny Shepehrd's 18 points and five assists. Alesia Rand tallied 10 points and four rebounds. Sylvia Valentino accounted for seven points while Monique Contreras and Yareli Gomez had five points apiece. Gomez led the way with nine boards.


Zoe Brown, Alliyana Page and Lauren Perez chipped in four markers each while Kiera Parks had two points. Amaya Payne grabbed four rebounds while Gomez registered four steals.

Minjarez's squad trailed 19-8 after the first quarter but rebounded to outscore the visitors 18-14 in the second stanza. Valentino hit a three-ball and Shepherd made a lay-up to pull within six, 19-13. Valentino's lay-up made it a four-point game. Trailing 31-18, Page hit two free throws. Shepherd's lay-up pulled the team within 10, 33-23. Shepherd rattled off three more points, including a bucket at the buzzer, slicing the deficit to seven, 33-26.  

The Panthers trimmed the margin to five at the 6:02 mark on Gomez's basket off a pass from Shepherd. Her two free throws with 4:09 to play made it 40-35, but that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.

For the game, York hit 21-of-51 from the floor. The team canned 14-of-20 from the foul line. The Panthers grabbed 33 rebounds and had 10 steals. York scored 30 points in the paint.
