YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team dropped an 87-76 contest against Bethany Wednesday evening as
Destiny Shepherd scored a career high 35 points while also scoring her 1,000
th career point in the process.
The Panthers are now 6-16 overall, including 1-14 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Destiny Shepherd's 35-point effort. She buried 11-of-26 from the floor, including five-of-10 from downtown. For good measure, she hit eight-of-11 from the free throw line.
Olivia Adams netted 14 points and grabbed 15 rebounds.
Alliyana Page totaled eight points and 10 rebounds while Sylvia Valenntino had eight markers.
Lauren Perez chipped in six points.
Zoe Brown added three points and
Yareli Gomez accounted for two points.
Down 9-5, Page made a lay-up and a pair of free throws from Shepherd knotted the game. Trailing 20-14,
Monique Contreras found Shepherd for a lay-up and the ensuing charity toss completed the old-fashioned three-point play. Page connected on an inside shot before Valentino nailed a three-ball off a pass from Brown for a 22-20 advantage. However, Bethany hit a three-ball just before the buzzer for a 26-24 edge.
With the score at 29-24, Shepherd netted the next five points, tying the game. Bethany led 41-31, but Perez and Valentino answered with deep shots, slicing the deficit to four, 41-37, with 3:13 to play before halftime. The Panthers trailed by eight before
Lawson Hiltl connected with Shepherd for a shot from distance, making it 46-41 with under a minute remaining. The Swedes led 49-41 at the break.
Facing a nine-point deficit, Shepherd connected on a three-point bucket. Adams and Page hit shots, pulling the Panthers within two, 52-50, at the 6:22 mark. Bethany led 62-53 before York tallied the final four points of the frame, making it a two-possession game entering the fourth frame.
Shepherd connected on a lay-up and hit a free throw with 6:33 to go in the fourth, slicing the deficit to seven, 69-62. However, that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.
For the game, York canned 27-of-68 from the floor, including nine-of-28 from behind the three-point stripe. The squad hit 13-of-23 from the free throw line. The Panthers held a 44-36 edge on the glass, including an 18-9 margin on the offensive boards. Minjarez's team dished out 11 assists, had six steals and forced 12 turnovers, resulting in 19 points.
Shepherd has 1,003 points for her career and needs just 30 points to reach 1,000 for her career as a Panther. Shepherd netted 32 markers at Concordia University.
