Men's Basketball: Strong effort by Panthers falls short against Grand View

YORK, Neb. — York (0-1) lost 90-82 to Grand View on Thursday in the season home opener. The Panthers shot 59.3% from the field and made 9 of 17 from 3-point range, but committed 15 turnovers and were outscored 27-9 at the free-throw line.

York opened the first half with a 9-0 run from 19:22 to 17:38, getting two dunks and a layup from Scottie Johnson around Awit Mamer's 3-pointer. After Keryn Collins pushed the lead to 14-3 with a 3-pointer at 15:41 and the Panthers were still ahead 20-11, Grand View worked back with perimeter scoring, including consecutive 3-pointers that tied the game at 22 and put York behind 25-22. The Vikings later led 31-24 at 5:33, but York answered with an 8-0 run as Johnson scored inside and at the line, Mamer followed with a layup after an offensive rebound, and Isaiah Lloyd's layup and free throw moved the Panthers ahead 32-31 at 4:01. Grand View closed the half with baskets and two free throws before Collins scored the final three York points, leaving the Panthers behind 38-35 at halftime.

The Panthers stayed within reach early in the second half, and after the Vikings went ahead 50-46, Awit Mamer hit a 3-pointer at 14:56 to begin a York push. Grand View answered during the stretch, but Logan Beckstrom made 3-pointers at 13:30 and 11:02, with Mamer also scoring off a Jadyn Hollis steal, as the Panthers moved in front 61-59. The game remained tied at 64 and 67 after Zeb Svoboda hit back-to-back 3-pointers, but the Vikings scored to build a 76-69 lead with 5:03 left. York cut the margin with a Mamer tip-in and a late Svoboda 3-pointer, but Grand View made enough free throws and added a dunk in the final minute to close out a 90-82 result.
