Women's Basketball: Panthers fight hard but can't pull off upset on the road

BARTLESVILLE, Okla. – The York University women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 82-75 contest at Oklahoma Wesleyan Saturday afternoon.
 
 The Panthers are now 8-19 on the season, including 3-17 in KCAC action.
 
 Head coach Corinna Minjarez's squad was led by Destiny Shepherd's 15 points. Zoe Brown added 13 points as did Monique Contreras. Alliyana Page scored 12 points and had eight rebounds. Amaya Payne netted nine points while Alesia Rand posted six points and snagged 10 rebounds. 
 
 Lauren Perez chipped in three points while Olivia Adams and Yareli Gomez each had two. 
 
 Leading 16-15 late in the first quarter, Kiera Parks found Adams for a lay-up, giving the squad a three-point edge entering the second frame.
 
 Down 20-18, Brown nailed a shot from distance and Page hit two free throws at the 8:37 mark. Tied at 29-29, Payne scored on two lay-ups and Rand hit an inside shot, pushing the margin to six, 35-29. Page's two charity tosses completed the 8-0 spurt. York maintained a 3934 lead at intermission. 
 
 Up 44-38, Shepherd found Brown for a three-point bucket. Shepherd and Page hit free throws, extending the advantage to 11, 49-38. However, the home team went on a 15-4 spurt to close out the quarter, tying the game at 53-53. 
 
 Contreras gave the visitors a 57-56 advantage with 6:58 to go. Down 62-57, Contreras and Shepherd hit shots, bringing the team within one with 5:08 to go. However, that was as close as the team could get the rest of the way.  
 
 For the game, York hit 27-of-52 from the floor. The team canned five shots from distance and netted 16-of-22 from the charity stripe. The Panthers grabbed 34 rebounds, including nine on the offensive glass. Minjarez's squad scored 40 points in the paint and accounted for 15 second-chance points.
