Softball: Panthers fight tough in day two of KC NAIA Invite

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University softball team dropped a pair of games Sunday, falling to Cottey College 7-3 and Park University 11-2.

The Panthers are now 1-7 on the season.

Against Cottey College, York trailed 6-0 entering the bottom of the fourth stanza. Shannon Nelson led off the frame with a base on balls and promptly swiped second base. After moving to third on a groundout, Chloe Lockhart uncorked a two-run shot.

The Panthers threatened again in the fifth inning. Taylor Jones singled and went to second as Kailyn Ruckman reached on an error. Abby Salazar entered for Jones and moved to third on Morgan Cameron's groundout. However, back-to-back outs ended the frame.

Down 7-2 in the sixth, Caitlyn Dannenfelzer looped a one-out single to right field. Two batters later, Emma Peeples singled up the middle. Jones' base knock brought in Dannenfelzer.

Taylor Larson singled with two out in the seventh, but the squad was unable to push across another run.

For the game, Dannenfelzer, Jones and Larson had two hits apiece. Lockhart drove in two.

In the circle, Lockhart worked four innings and had four strikeouts. Alex Falk tossed the final three frames and had one strikeout.

Against Park, York struck with a run in the top of the first. Cameron reached on an error and stole second. Nelson ripped a single up the middle, knocking in Cameron for the one-run cushion.

Park scored 11 runs in the second. The Panthers responded in the fifth. Cameron led off the inning with an infield single and moved to second on a wild pitch. Moriah Hoshowski drew a walk and Larson reached on a fielder's choice, which erased Cameron at third base. Two batters later, Dannenfelzer reached on an error, allowing Hoshowski to cross the plate.

For the game, Cameron led the way with two hits. Megan Brownson, Larson, Nelson and Ruckman all had one hit apiece.

In the circle, Lockhart got the start and went 1.1 innings. She had a strikeout. Lexi Knapp recorded an out before Falk tossed the final 2.1 frames with a strikeout.

The Panthers return to action Friday when they take on Graceland and Park in games at 10 a.m., and 2:30 p.m., in Branson, Mo.
