Women's Basketball: Panthers fall to Threshers in season finale

NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team wrapped up the season with a 78-61 loss at Bethel Saturday afternoon.
 
The Panthers finished 8-20 on the year, including 3-21 in KCAC action. 
 
Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was guided by Destiny Shepherd's game-high 32 points. She drained 11-of-20 from the floor, including six-of-eight from downtown. Shepherd grabbed seven rebounds and had a steal in 33 minutes of work.
 
Alliyana Page and Sylvia Valentino netted seven points apiece. Lawson Hiltl, Zoe Brown and Monique Contreras had three points while Alesia Rand and Amaya Payne scored two points each. 
 
Down 4-2, Valentino registered a steal and a lay-up. Page canned a three-ball off a pass from Olivia Adams. Trailing 15-8, Rand found Contreras for a three-point bucket at the 3:20 mark. 
 
Shepherd hit a field goal with 8:51 to play in the second stanza, and again a minute later, bringing the team within eight at 25-17. She drilled a shot from behind the arc, making it 27-20. Page found the bottom of the net and Hiltl took a pass from Page for a three-ball, cutting the deficit to 10, 35-25. However, the Threshers held a 40-25 lead at the break.
 
York trailed 56-34 near the end of the third quarter, but Shepherd connected on a three-point basket. Bethel maintained a 60-37 advantage heading into the final frame.
 
Hiltl dished a pass to Shepherd for a shot from behind the arc at the 8:39 mark. Page connected on a jumper at the 8:08 mark. Shepherd netted the team's next 10 points. Payne and Rand buried field goals before Shepherd netted another shot from deep, making it 75-59 with 2:16 remaining. 
 
For the game, York hit 22-of-58 from the floor, including nine-of-20 from downtown. The squad buried eight-of-16 from the charity stripe. Minjarez's team grabbed 30 rebounds, dished out nine assists and had 10 steals.
