Softball: Panthers open season with two tough losses at Dordt Classic

SIOUX CENTER, Iowa – The York University softball team lost a pair of one-run games on Friday, falling 10-9 to Dakota Wesleyan and 2-1 to Dordt. 
 
 The Panthers are now 0-2 on the season. 
 
Down 1-0 in the third inning against Dakota Wesleyan, York quickly took a 3-1 lead. Kailyn Ruckman ripped a single through the left side and moved to third on an error with one down. Caitlyn Dannenfelzer posted a base hit to center field, plating Ruckman. Taylor Larson rocketed a triple to right center, making it 2-1. A sacrifice fly by Chloe Lockhart gave the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
 
Dakota Wesleyan plated seven runs in the fourth for an 8-3 lead. In the bottom of the fourth, Emma Peeples singled and hustled to third on a double by Taylor Jones. Morgan Cameron's infield single plated Peeples, making it 8-4. Dannenfel's sacrifice fly pushed in Jones, bringing the home team within three, 8-5.  
 
With one down in the fifth, Lockhart singled and took second on Lexi Knapp's base hit. Abby Salazar and Moriah Hoshowski entered as pinch runners. Each promptly moved up 60 feet on a walk from Peeples. Jones doubled to right center field, pulling the Panthers within one at 8-7. Ruckman's base knock drove in Peeples and Jones, giving York a 9-8 lead.
 
The designated visitors scored twice in the seventh for a 10-9 margin.  
  
For the game, Larson, Knapp, Jones and Ruckman had two hits apiece. Larson had two triples while Jones had two doubles. Dannenfelzer, Jones and Ruckman had two RBI each while Jones and Peeples each scored twice. 
 
In the circle, Lockhart got the start and went the distance. She had four strikeouts in the loss.
 
Against Dordt, York trailed 2-0 entering the fifth stanza. Lockhart reached on an error and Morgan Cameron entered as a inch runner. After taking second on a base knock from Peeples, she took third on a passed ball. Cameron scored on an error, allowing Jones to reach first. 
 
In the seventh, Knapp reached on an error. Salazar entered as a pinch runner and took second Shannon Nelson singled to third base. However, she was left stranded.  
 
For the game, Nelson and Peeples had hits. 
 
In the circle, Knapp went the distance and had two strikeouts. 
 
The Panthers return to action Saturday when they take on No. 17 Northwestern College at 9 a.m., and Culver Stockton College at 11 a.m.
