Softball: York sweeps McPherson on windy afternoon

YORK, Neb. – The York University softball team posted a doubleheader sweep of McPherson College by scores of 7-1 and 3-0.
 
The Panthers are now 13-21 on the season, including 8-6 in KCAC action. 
 
Head coach Aaron Alvarez's team jumped on top with a run in the bottom of the first. Brooklyn Hadl doubled to left field. With two outs, Taylor Jones recorded an infield single, pushing Hadl across home plate for a 1-0 lead.
 
Emma Peeples posted a single up the middle and swiped second base. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Peeples scored on a groundout by by Moriah Hoshowski for a two-run cushion. In the fourth, Peeples got things going with a base hit with two down. She stole second and scored on a base knock by Kailyn Ruckman for a 3-0 advantage.
 
Up 3-1 in the fifth, Shannon Nelson drew a walk and swiped second. After taking third on Larson's base hit, Nelson scored on Lexi Knapp's groundout. 
 
The Panthers tacked on insurance runs in the sixth. Peeples singled and stole second. After a walk to Ruckman, Hoshowski reached on a fielder's choice, erasing Peeples. Hadl singled home Ruckman. Nelson's base hit plated Hoshowski while Larson's base knock drove in Nelson for a 7-1 lead. 
 
For the game, Peeples led the way with three hits and two runs scored. Hadl and Larson also had two base hits apiece. Nelson crossed home twice. 
 
In the circle, Knapp worked 5.2 innings and had three strikeouts. Ashley Falk tossed the final 1.1 innings for the save. 
 
The second game saw the Panthers take the lead in the second frame. Knapp reached on a throwing error and Sydney Rann entered as a inch runner. She promptly stole second and moved to third on a groundout by Bethany Wright. Peeples lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, allowing Ran to race home.
 
The score remained 1-0 until the sixth frame. Nelson earned a lead-off walk and swiped second base. After taking third on a sacrifice bunt by Larson, Jones lifted a fly ball to right field. Nelson raced home on the play for the two-run margin. Knapp singled and moved to second on a throwing error. Caitlyn Dannenfelzer entered as a pinch runner and scored on Wright's base hit to left field.
 
For the game, Nelson, Knapp, Wright and Hoshowski had hits. 
 
In the circle, Falk went the distance and surrendered just one hit in the complete-game shutout.
