KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University softball team split a doubleheader at Avila Tuesday afternoon, winning 6-2 before falling 3-1 in the nightcap.
The Panthers are now 16-30 on the season, including 11-15 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Aaron Alvarez's team jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
Brooklyn Hadl roped the first pitch of the game into left field.
Moriah Hoshowski followed it up with a base knock. With two down,
Lexi Knapp belted a double to the gap in right center field for the 2-0 cushion.
Hoshowski led off the third with a base hit to right field. She moved to third when
Taylor Larson sacrificed and reached on an error. Two batters later, Knapp's sacrifice fly allowed Hoshowski to race home for a 3-0 lead.
Up 3-1 in the fourth,
Shannon Nelson drew a two-out walk. After swiping second base, Hadl knocked her in via a single to center field. In the fifth, York tacked onto the lead.
Taylor Jones recorded a one-out single and scored on Knapp's double to right center field. Two batters later, Knapp scored on a base knock from
Bethany Wright for a 6-1 advantage. Avila scored a run in the seventh, but it was not enough.
For the game, Hoshowski tallied three hits and scored twice. Hadl and Knapp had two hits apiece. Knapp drove in four runs in the win.
In the circle, Knapp worked 6.1 innings and gave up two runs on nine hits.
Ashley Falk slammed the door on the home team by tossing the final two-thirds of a frame.
The second game saw Avila take an early 1-0 lead. However, the Panthers got on the board in the fourth stanza. Hoshowski led off the inning by blasting the first pitch to the gap in left center field for a triple. Hoshowski scored when Larson hit a fly ball to the center fielder. However, Avila plated two runs in the bottom of the inning for a 3-1 advantage.
York had a runner on base in the fifth and sixth innings, but the team was unable to cut into the deficit.
For the game, Hoshowski and
Emma Peeples had two hits apiece. Hoshowski garnered a triple and scored a run.
In the circle, Falk went the distance and gave up three runs – only two of which were earned – on four hits. She tallied three strikeouts and had just one walk.
