ST. LOUIS, Mo. — York opened up the Eutectics Classic facing a tough challenge against William Penn University, as they fell in a tightly contested five-set match by a score of 2-3. Despite a strong performance in the second set, with a hitting percentage of .344, York was unable to secure the victory.
The first set began with York taking an early lead, highlighted by a kill from
Jassania Joseph and a service ace from
Meadow Nusbaum, putting it ahead 4-1. However, William Penn responded with a series of points, tying the score at 9-9. Both teams exchanged leads until William Penn capitalized on errors by York, taking a 16-15 lead. York called a timeout but was unable to regain momentum. William Penn closed out the set at 25-20.
York secured the second set with a 25-21 victory over William Penn. York built early momentum with consecutive service aces from Joseph to lead 3-1.
Ambar Ortiz contributed with an ace, extending the lead to 9-5. Despite a rally from William Penn, York maintained a lead thanks to key kills by
Leyra Ruiz and Joseph pushing the score to 23-17. After a timeout by York, the set concluded with a William Penn error, finalizing York's advantage at 25-21.
York took control in the third set, overcoming an early deficit to secure a 25-19 victory. William Penn initially led 2-0 before York responded with a key kill from Ruiz, assisted by
Kory Anschutz, and a service ace by
Tianna Clark, which helped tie the score at 6-6. York then pulled ahead with a series of kills, including a decisive one by
Maria Del Mar Rivera, assisted by Nusbaum, extending its lead to 13-9.
William Penn took an early lead in the fourth set, capitalizing on a kill by Bojorquez-McFadden and an attack error from York to go up 2-0. York's Ruiz responded with a kill, but William Penn maintained control, extending the lead to 5-2 after a block. Despite a timeout called by York, William Penn continued to press, with a kill increasing the lead to 12-8. York managed to close the gap to 17-17, thanks to multiple attack errors from William Penn. However, a kill by William Penn helped them regain momentum, and a service ace gave them the win.
William Penn controlled the final set from the get-go, going up 3-0 before going on a run to lead 11-5. York could only muster a few more points before falling 15-8 in the final set.
Joseph led the team with 10 kills and recorded five service aces. Anschutz provided consistent playmaking with 21 assists and eight digs. Ortiz made a defensive impact, collecting a team-high 17 digs while also serving four aces. Nusbaum added 17 assists and two service aces, further supporting the team's effort.
York vs. Brescia
York picked up its first win of the season in the nightcap of the Eutectics Classic, securing a decisive 3-0 victory over Brescia University. The Panthers won in straight sets with scores of 25-21, 25-22, and 25-21.
York began the first set against Brescia with a balanced attack. Early on,
Kory Anschutz and
Leyra Ruiz were pivotal in leveling the score at 3-3 after a block on Callie Mason. The Panthers gained momentum mid-set, with
Maria Del Mar Rivera and
Ronan Merriex contributing key kills to tie the score at 9-9.
Ileysha Rodriguez's consecutive service aces then propelled York into the lead at 10-9. Despite several service errors from both teams, the Panthers maintained their advantage, capitalizing on attack errors by Brescia to extend their lead. The set concluded with a kill by
Florencia Felmer, assisted by
Meadow Nusbaum, sealing a 25-21 victory for York.
In set number two, the Panthers secured a 25-22 victory, capitalizing on several key errors by Brescia. Rivera contributed a pivotal kill with an assist from
Valentina Jimenez to close out the set.
Emma Kerley was instrumental in building York's lead, delivering consecutive kills early in the set to push the score to 6-5. Despite a series of service errors, York maintained its advantage and capitalized on Brescia's attack errors, including two crucial blocks by Merriex.
York secured a decisive win in the third set with a final score of 25-21 against Brescia. The visitors took an early lead with Rivera's kill from Anschutz, and they maintained momentum with multiple service aces, including two from
Jassania Joseph. Ruiz and Felmer contributed significantly to York's offensive push, each delivering crucial kills. Brescia attempted a comeback with Mason and Kendyn Syfert leading their scoring efforts, but York held strong, ultimately capitalizing on a service error from Brescia to close out the set.
Felmer led York with a season-high 10 kills on 22 attempts, hitting at a .273 percentage. Anschutz led the Panthers with 13 assists and two service aces. Rivera added seven kills and recorded eight digs. Joseph made an impact from the service line with three aces and also added a block assist.
