YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team turned in an outstanding performance in the 79-44 win over Southwestern College Saturday.
The Panthers are now 41-3 overall, including a 3-10 ledger in KCAC play.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Pasiko Hivichiani's game-high 14 points. She also added six rebounds, three assists and three steals.
Britney Schroer added 13 points and five boards while
Imani Honey chipped in 12 points, eight boards and five assists.
Monique Contreras and
Olivia Shannon chipped in eight points apiece.
Destiny Shepherd added seven points while
Ashley Rubio garnered five points.
Jess McGrath, Lawson Hilti,
Zeze Cooper,
Alliyana Page and
Xuriyah Harry all scored in the win.
Tied at 6-6, McGrath found Shepherd for a three-point bucket, giving the home team the lead for good. Contreras pushed the margin to six on a shot from downtown at the 5:00 mark. Leading 18-13, Honey buried two free throws with 1:46 to play in the frame for a seven-point edge. Up 22-17, Shannon drilled back-to-back three-point baskets en route to a 28-20 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Panthers dominated the frame, outscoring the visitors 15-3 to essentially put the game away. Hivichiani nailed two free throws to get things started. Shepherd made a lay-up before Schroer's jumper extended the score to 34-20 with 6:07 to play. A lay-up made it 34-22 but Rubio netted four straight points for a 16-point margin. Honey made a lay-up before Hivichiani canned two charity tosses. Honey's free throw made it 43-22 with 2:02 to go before halftime. The visitors made a free throw to make it 43-23 at the break.
York outscored the visitors by 12 once again in the third frame. A pair of free throws by Honey and a jumper by Schroer pushed the margin to 22, 49-27. Leading 55-34, Honey canned a jumper and Shannon made two charity tosses for a 59-34 advantage with 3:00 to play in the stanza. Up by 24, 62-38, Page took a pass from
Olivia Adams for a lay-up. Hivichiani netted two charity tosses and Cooper made a free throw for a 67-38 lead.
York cruised to the win by outscoring the visitors by five points in the fourth stanza. Up 70-44, Hivichiani scored on an inside bucket. McGrath hit a three-ball before Rubio made a free throw with 5:25 to play. Contreras' three-point shot extended the margin to 25, 79-44, with 4:28 to play.
For the game, York hit 26-of-62 (41.9 percent) from the field, including nine-of-21 (42.9 percent) from downtown. The team connected on 18 free throws. The Panthers snagged 55 rebounds. The team dished out 18 assists in the win and recorded 24 points off 29 turnovers. The home team controlled the paint, outscoring the visitors 28-16.
