McPHERSON, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team registered an 85-69 win at McPherson Monday evening in a league contest.
The Panthers are now 5-13 overall, including 4-10 in KCAC play.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Imani Honey and
Britney Schroer. Each poured in a team-high 19 points in the victory. Schroer pulled down 14 rebounds for a double-double. Honey narrowly missed out on a double-double with nine boards.
Audrey Hernandez added 12 points while
Destiny Shepherd notched 10 points, five rebounds and four assists.
Jess McGrath and
Ashley Rubio netted six points apiece. Rubio snagged six boards in the victory.
Down 15-9 in the first quarter,
Monique Contreras nailed a three-point bucket with 4:06 to go. Rubio pulled the team within one off a pass from
Britney Schroer. Trailing 18-16,
Destiny Shepherd hit a free throw. With one second left on the clock,
Audrey Hernandez found
Olivia Shannon for a three-point shot, giving the visitors a 20-18 edge heading into the second quarter.
An 8-2 spurt to start the second stanza propelled the visitors to a 28-20 advantage. During the run,
Xuriyah Harry converted a lay-up. Hernandez hit back-to-back shots from distance for the eight-point advantage. Leading 30-29,
Imani Honey nailed a shot from behind the arc. Schroer made a lay-up before Shepherd canned a three-point basket at the 2:13 mark. Schroer's lay-up and Honey's jumper pushed the margin to 13, 42-29, with 1:22 to play. The Panthers maintained a 45-31 lead at the break.
The home squad cut the lead to just six at the 3:11 mark but Schroer answered with two free throws and Honey added one, pushing the score to 59-50. However, the Bulldogs cut the margin to seven heading into the final frame.
Contreras gave York some momentum with a lay-up at the 8:55 mark. Rubio's jumper and Honey's basket extended the advantage to 13, 70-57. Up 73-61, Shepherd made a lay-up. Hernandez drilled a shot from distance and Shepherd made another inside shot for a 19-point margin with 3:19 to play. The home team cut the margin to 12 with 1:15 to play but Honey made two charity tosses and Schroer made a lay-up for the final tally.
For the game, York hit 29-of-65 (44.6 percent) from the floor, including 10-of-18 (55.6 percent) from distance. The team buried 17-of-22 (77.3 percent) from the charity stripe. The Panthers pulled down 44 rebounds and held the lead for 30:30. York dished out 15 assists and had 26 points off the bench.
