Wichita, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team lost a 92-59 contest to Friends University Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 3-9 overall, including a 2-6 record in KCAC play.
Head coach
Corinna Minjarez's team was led by
Ashley Rubio's 15-point, seven-rebound effort.
Jess McGrath added 14 points while
Arcadya Conway accounted for six points.
Clara Romero snagged nine rebounds in the contest.
Trailing 5-2 in the early going,
Destiny Shepherd drilled a shot from behind the three-point arc. Down 11-7, McGrath nailed a three-point bucket at the 2:55 mark. Rubio's jumper propelled the Panthers to a 12-11 edge. McGrath hit two charity tosses prior to Rubio making one for a 15-11 advantage with 51 ticks remaining in the first quarter. Up 15-14, Rubio took a pass from
Imani Honey and buried a shot for a 17-14 lead heading into the second frame.
Up 17-16, an 8-0 spurt gave the visitors a 25-16 working margin with 7:03 to play in the half. During the run, Rubio had four points while
Britney Schroer and Honey netted two points apiece. Up 27-24, Conway and McGrath drilled back-to-back three-point shots, extending the lead to 33-24 with 2:59 to play. However, the Falcons rattled off 11 consecutive points for a 35-33 advantage at halftime.
Friends University managed to break the game open with a 15-0 run early in the third quarter. However, the Panthers continued to fight hard. The team hit back-to-back shots from Rubio and
Clara Romero to make it 52-39. Down 60-45, Honey drilled a pair of free throws to pull within 13 heading into the final quarter.
For the game, the Panthers hit 22 shots from the floor, including six from downtown. York pulled down 21 offensive rebounds, resulting in 16 second-chance points. Minjarez's squad tallied 18 points in the paint and dished out 11 assists in the contest.
The Panthers return to action Wednesday, Jan. 10, when they host Kansas Wesleyan at 6 p.m.
