NORTH NEWTON, Kan. – The York University volleyball team dropped a 3-0 contest at Bethel Wednesday evening.
The Panthers are now 15-8 overall, including 1-2 in league play. The home team improved to 15-5 overall and 3-0 in KCAC action.
Head coach
Irick Gardner's team was paced by
Liberty Baker's five kills.
Avery Schneider and
Aubrey Bostick had four kills apiece.
Kenna Tarnowski,
Emma Kerley and
Kaylee Weigel tallied three kills each.
Kensey Clifton and
Mariah Janda dished out eight assists apiece.
Tarnowski led the defense with three blocks. Bostick, Kerley and Schneider had two blocks apiece.
Valentina Jimenez recorded a team-best 12 digs.
In the first set, York jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind a kill from Weigel. Moments later, Weigel's point pushed the score to 5-2. Down 9-6, an error by Bethel and a block from Kerley and Tarnowski pulled the Panthers within one at 9-8. However, the Threshers embarked on a 9-1 run and took the opening frame 25-14.
Kerley's kill and an ace from Janda gave York a 2-0 edge in the second stanza. Two errors and a kill from Tarnowski extended the lead to four at 5-1. An 11-0 run by Bethel gave the home squad a 13-7 advantage before Schneider and Tarnowski combined for a block. The Panthers pulled within six at 18-12 on a kill from Kerley, but that was as close as the visitors could get int eh 25-16 loss.
Kerley's point in the early portion of the third frame made it 6-5 in favor of the Threshers, but the home team went on a 6-1 spurt before Bostick stuffed an attempt. On the ensuing play, Bostick teamed with Schneider for another point. Down 14-8, Schneider and Weigel posted back-to-back kills before an attack error by Bethel made it 14-11.
Trailing 18-11, a service error by the Threshers sparked a 5-1 spurt by York, culminating with a kill by Baker to pull within three at 19-16. With the score at 24-18, Baker recorded a kill. Two errors by the home team and a kill from Bostick put the score at 24-22. Bostick added another kill and then an error by Bethel, in addition to an ace by
Florencia Felmer, made it 25-24 York. However, the Threshers rattled off the final three points for the 27-25 victory.
