GOODWELL, Okla. – The York University women's basketball team converted a jumper with five seconds to play to pick up a 63-61 victory at Oklahoma Panhandle State University Thursday evening in the season opener.
The Panthers are now 1-0 on the year.

Ashley Rubio's 13 points.
Britney Schroer and
Clara Romero added 10 points apiece.
Pasiko Hvichiani pulled down five boards and dished out five assists in the victory.
Just 10 seconds into the season, Hvichiani found
Ashley Rubio for a three-point bucket. Down 7-3,
Destiny Shepherd connected with
Alliyana Page for a shot from distance. Trailing 12-8, Romero found the bottom of the net off a pass from Hvichiani.
Destiny Shepherd converted a lay-up, and Romero drained a jumper at the 2:35 mark for a 14-12 advantage.
Trailing 16-14 at the end of the first quarter, Schroer's bucket knotted the score at the 9:24 mark of the second quarter. Two minutes later, Schroer made another inside basket and a
Kiera Parks free throw with 6:48 to play pushed the advantage to 19-16. Leading 25-23, Shepherd hit two free throws at the 2:07 mark. Romero's two charity tosses extended the advantage to 29-23 with 1:46 to play before halftime. A 7-0 spurt by the Panthers to close the half, including a three-ball off the hand of Lawson Hilti, made it a 36-25 game at the break.
The home team embarked on a 13-1 run to start the third frame, but York answered the call. Leading 40-39, Romero converted a lay-up. After Shepherd hit two free throws, OPSU hit a jumper. Hvichiani found Romero for an inside shot en route to a 46-43 advantage heading into the fourth stanza.
The Panthers took a 48-45 lead on a jumper by Schroer at the 8:28 mark of the fourth quarter. Rubio's lay-up less than a minute later made it a five-point game. However, OPSU embarked on a 14-0 spurt for a 59-50 advantage with 4:33 to go. York stopped the run when Romero found Rubio for a lay-up. Hvichiani nailed a three-ball with 3:41 to play and Rubio converted two charity tosses at the 3:15 mark.
Rubio cut the deficit to one on an inside bucket with 74 seconds remaining. With just 23 seconds to play, Schroer nailed a jumper for a 61-60 lead. OPSU tied the game on a free throw with 13 seconds to play, but Rubio hit Schroer for the game-winning shot with five ticks on the clock. The home team missed a three-pointer at the buzzer, sealing the victory for the Panthers.
For the game, York hit 23-of-53 (43.4 percent), including five-of-16 (31.3 percent) from downtown. The team hit 12-of-14 (85.7 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Panthers return to action Saturday when they play an exhibition at Oklahoma Christian at 1 p.m.
