KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The York University men's soccer team recorded a 2-1 victory at Avila Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 4-4-3 on the year, including 3-2-1 in league play. Avila stands at 0-10 overall and 0-6 in KCAC action.
York broke the scoreless tie in the 39th minute when
Diego Yanes found the back of the net with a header on the cross from
Kaden Ogle for the 1-0 advantage.
After two great defensive plays to start the second half, the Panthers pushed forward. Yanes had a shot saved in the 59
th minute. He tried again a moment later but was blocked.
Alex Hulme followed it up but his shot was thwarted by the keeper.
In the 69
th minute, Mattias Trettel's attempt was saved. However, York struck for what turned out to be the match-winning goal at the 73:31 mark on a score by Ogle. Tristen Grommen made a nice pass to
Sergio Bueno who then found Ogle with a through ball for the score.
Avila quickly responded, scoring 23 seconds later, after an errant pass by the Panthers. York maintained possession for much of the rest of the contest en route to the victory.
For the match, the Panthers registered 22 shots, including 14 on goal. Avila tallied nine shots, with five coming on target.
York earned nine corner kicks compared to three by the home team.
In goal,
Jamie Watt played all 90 minutes and picked up four saves.
Yanes led the charge with eight shots, including three on goal. Hulme tallied three shots while
Tomas Viralhadas notched two shots on goal.
