Spires defense holds Panthers' offense in check

LEAVENWORTH, Kan. – The York University men's basketball team dropped a 76-55 decision at the University of Saint Mary Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 2-4 overall, including 0-2 in KCAC action.

York was led by Ikechukwu Nwaobi's 14-point performance. Dylan Holston added nine points, five boards and three steals while Andrew Bennett totaled eight points and four rebounds. Chris Dixon and Terrence Packer chipped in five points each. Packer and Amari Haynes distributed three assists apiece. 

Haynes led the way defensively, swatting two shots. Holston garnered a team-best three steals in the contest. 

In the early going, the Panthers trailed 7-4 before Carl Thorpe Jr., nailed an inside shot. Ikechukwu Nwaobi canned a lay-up for an 8-7 advantage at the 14:55 mark. Down 16-8, Holston and Dixon nailed back-to-back three-point shots, making it 16-14. 

The home team went on a run and held a 32-18 edge before Dixon hit two free throws at the 3:22 mark. However, Saint Mary maintained a 40-23 lead at the break.

The Panthers tried to cut into the deficit in the second half. Down 54-32, Thorpe Jr., nailed a jumper. Amari Haynes found Garrett Johnson for a lay-up with 11:20 to play. A minute later, Rhino Hernandez connected with Johnson for another bucket, trimming the deficit to 16, 54-38. That was as close as the Panthers could get the rest of the way. 

Down 72-43 with under six minutes to go, Holston hit a lay-up off a pass from Haynes. Packer found Nwaobi for a three-ball to make it 72-48. 

Trailing 76-48, Packer and Holston each hit lay-ups before Packer finished the scoring with a shot from distance.

For the game, York hit 23-of-56 from the floor, including four-of-13 from downtown. The squad held a 34-31 edge on the glass, including an 8-7 margin on the offensive end. The Panthers dished out 10 assists and had 25 points off the bench. The team converted 11 turnovers into 13 points and netted 30 points in the lane.
