Panthers stun Coyotes and move on to KCAC Semifinals

WICHITA, Kan. – The seventh-seeded York University women's soccer team upended second-seeded Kansas Wesleyan in the KCAC Quarterfinals Tuesday evening by a score of 1-0.

The Panthers improve to 9-6-4 on the year while KWU falls to 11-7-1.

York nearly got on the board in the eighth minute of the match. Zippora Nigg rocketed the first attempt of the contest, but it was saved.

Kansas Wesleyan responded with a pair of shots on goal, but Harumi Cornejo thwarted both attempts over the next 12 minutes of action.

A pair of attempts by the Panthers in the 22nd minute were unsuccessful. Kadelia Wilkins' attempt was blocked while Sofia Villa Monterd's shot was saved. However, the visitors broke through at the 27:02 mark. Lorna Campos found the head of Rieke Wolff on a corner kick and she promptly one-timed it into the back of the net for a 1-0 advantage.

The Panthers continued pushing forward as Christina Prats tallied a shot on goal at the 36:44 mark.

The home team nearly knotted the score in the 39th minute, but an attempt hit the crossbar. Less than a minute later, Cornejo came up with another save to keep it at 1-0 entering the second half.

York's defense was tremendous the entire match, but the group put forth an amazing second-half effort. The Panthers limited the opposition to four shots on goal and Cornejo stopped each one. KWU also hit the post on one attempt, but York stood strong in the hard-fought win.

For the match, Wolff recorded the match-winning score while Campos had the assist. York posted five shots, including four on frame. The team also earned one corner kick.

In goal, Cornejo stopped all eight shots for the clean sheet.

The Panthers return to action Friday, Nov. 8 when they square off against Avila (13-3-3) at 7:30 p.m. Avila won its opening-round match against Evangel by a 2-0 score. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
