WICHITA, Kan. – The No. 7 York University women's soccer team advanced to the KCAC Championship after playing to a 1-1 draw with No. 3 Avila before securing the 5-4 edge in penalty kicks.
The Panthers are now 9-6-5 on the season while Avila falls to 13-3-4.
Trailing 1-0 in the early going, York knotted the score when
Gracie Reynolds found the back of the net at the 26:28 mark.
Zippora Nigg and
Cristina Prats were credited with assists on the play.
In the 37
th minute of action, the Panthers took a corner kick and
Maisie Briscoe rocketed a shot less than a minute later, but it was stopped by the keeper. Neither team was able to get off another attempt in the half, sending the contest to the second period tied at 1-1.
Nigg blasted a shot toward the goal in the 60
th minute, but it sailed wide of the frame. Seconds later,
Lorna Campos rocketed an attempt, but the shot was saved.
Each team had a shot on goal in the final 10 minutes of action. However, the keepers were up to the challenge and registered saves.
Nigg tallied a shot on frame in the first overtime while Avila had a pair of attempts. A defensive battle in the second extra period,
Avery Heins tallied the lone shot on goal, but it was saved.
Reynolds gave York a 1-0 lead after a successful penalty kick. Tied at 1-1, Nigg converted her shot.
Claudia Montero found the back of the net for a 3-2 edge. Avila then missed an opportunity.
Sofia Villa Monterd pushed it to 4-2, but Avila also converted to make it 4-3. The Panthers missed their fifth shot and the home team secured the attempt past the keeper, knotting it at 4-4.
Going to extra penalty kicks,
Adriana Castellanos Rodrigo belted her shot into the back of the net. Avila was unable to tie the contest, sending York to the championship match.
Harumi Cornejo tallied four saves while playing all 110 minutes between the pipes.
