Panthers beat Warriors behind Shepherd's career night

YANKTON, S.D. – The York University women's basketball team broke open a close game in the second half for a 68-47 victory at Midland University.

The Panthers are now 2-1 on the season.

Ashley Rubio started the scoring by hitting three charity tosses. A Monique Contreras lay-up off a pass from Britney Schroer at the 7:18 mark made it 5-0. Destiny Shepherd hit a three-point bucket and Schroer nailed a jumper for a 10-6 edge entering the second quarter.

Holding a 15-14 lead, Briana Bunkley converted a lay-up. Shepherd scored four consecutive points for a 21-14 edge with 1:50 to go in the half. Up 23-20, Shepherd netted another inside shot with 10 ticks on the clock for a five-point advantage at the break.

Leading 34-30 with just over three minutes to play in the third quarter, Shepherd hit a lay-up. A minute later, Clara Romero found Kiera Parks for an inside bucket and an eight-point working margin. Just before the end of the frame, Pasiko Hvichiani found Shepherd for a three-point basket, giving the Panthers a 41-32 edge.

Shepherd buried back-to-back three-pointers in the early going of the fourth quarter for a 47-34 lead. Up 51-39, Bunkley found Shepherd for a deep shot. Contreras hit Shepherd for another three-ball for a 57-41 margin. With the score at 57-43, York went on an 8-0 spurt over a 90-second span, putting the contest out of reach.

Shepherd led the way with 28 points on 10-of-17 shooting from the floor. Bunkley added 16 points while Contreras tallied five points in the win.

Alliyana Page snagged a team-best seven rebounds. Schroer had five assists while Shepherd posted three steals.

For the game, York hit 26-of-71 (36.6 percent) from the floor. The Panthers outrebounded the opposition 48-41, including a 15-10 edge on the offensive glass. York recorded 24 points off the bench and scored 27 points off 24 turnovers. The visitors also dominated the paint, outscoring the home team 32-16.
