YORK, Neb. – The York University women's basketball team lost a 74-57 contest to Sterling Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers are now 2-2 overall, including 0-1 in league play.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was paced by Clara Romero's 20-point, seven-rebound performance. Britney Schroer added 10 points and three assists. Destiny Shepherd, Pasiko Hvichiani and Lawson Hilti added five points apiece.

For the game, York hit 19-of-51 (37.3 percent), including five-of-22 (22.7 percent) from downtown. The team canned 14-of-18 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe. The Panthers held a 34-33 edge on the glass.

The Panthers dished out 11 assists, totaled nine steals and scored 16 points off 19 turnovers.

Sterling took an early 2-0 lead before Romero tied it at the 7:31 mark. Schroer hit a free throw for a 3-2 edge. A jumper by Schroer gave York a 5-4 lead, but that marked the last advantage for Minjarez's team the rest of the way.

Down 17-9, Hvichiani hit two free throws before finding Hilti for a three-ball to end the first quarter at 17-14.

York netted five consecutive points in the second stanza, pulling within two at 25-23, after Shepherd canned a shot from downtown. Trailing 35-27, Shepherd hit a lay-up before Alliyana Page made two free throws to pull within four, 35-31, at halftime.

Sterling extended the advantage to 58-44 at the end of the third quarter before the two teams played virtually even the rest of the way.
