First quarter struggles hurt Panthers

SALINA, Kan. – The York University women's basketball team lost a 93-65 contest at Kansas Wesleyan Wednesday evening.

The Panthers are now 2-7 overall and 0-6 in KCAC action. The Coyotes stand at 10-2 on the year and 6-0 against conference foes.

Head coach Corinna Minjarez's team was led by Destiny Shepherd's 16-point, four-rebound effort. Britney Schroer accounted for 14 points and four boards. Both student-athletes hit 50 percent of their shots from the floor. Olivia Shannon added seven points.

Clara Romero snagged a team-best seven rebounds. Pasiko Hvichiani and Alyssa Civitak distributed three assists apiece.

A quick 5-0 spurt by York gave the visitors a 9-4 edge. Tied at 4-4, Hvichiani hit a free throw before Shepherd and Hvichiani connected on buckets. However, an 18-0 spurt propelled the home team to a 24-11 lead after the first quarter.

The Panthers pulled to within 11 on a pair of occasions in the early going of the second stanza. Trailing 35-21, Britney Schroer canned a jumper. Shepherd connected on a free throw for a 35-24 score at the 5:19 mark. Down 45-31, the home squad embarked on a 5-0 run to conclude the frame while taking a 51-31 lead into halftime.

Trailing 58-33, Romero hit a free throw. Civitak launched a shot from behind the arc that connected, pulling the visitors within 21 at 58-37 in the third quarter. A 5-0 run by the Panthers made it 63-42 at the 3:21 mark. Romero buried a jumper before Schroer converted an old-fashioned three-point play. The Coyotes maintained a 70-46 lead going into the final 10 minutes of action.

York played KWU close in the fourth quarter, but the Panthers were unable to cut into the deficit. The Coyotes managed to outscore York 23-19 in the final frame.

For the game, the Panthers hit 24-of-58 from the floor. The squad canned three shots from downtown and connected on 14-of-23 from the charity stripe. York dished out nine assists in the contest. The Panthers registered five steals and converted nine turnovers into 19 points. York scored 34 points in the lane.
