York routs Tabor with electric offense

YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team posted an 88-67 victory over Tabor College Saturday evening.

The Panthers are now 4-6 overall, including 1-4 in KCAC action. The visitors fall to 1-7 overall and 1-4 in league play.

Leading 7-6, Andrew Bennett hit a pair of free throws, starting a spurt by York. Carl Thorpe Jr., found Chris Dixon for a lay-up. Bennett drained two more charity tosses before canning a jumper. A three-ball from Thorpe Jr., off a pass from Ikechukwu Nwaobi completed the 11-0 run.

Up 20-10, Dixon netted the next five points. Nwaobi took a pass from DJ Leaks for a three-ball. Leaks converted a lay-up before Bennett's field goal found the bottom of the net. Dylan Holston's three-point bucket completed another spurt, giving the Panthers a 35-11 edge. The home squad took a 44-26 lead at halftime after a pair of late free throws from Thorpe Jr.

Leading 56-42, Thorpe Jr., slammed home a pass from Nwaobi at the 14:38 mark. Up by 12, Thorpe Jr., nailed a jumper before Dixon converted a lay-up off a pass from Leaks. Up by 14, 68-54, Bennett hit a jumper and Dixon nailed a three-ball. A dunk from Nwaobi, as well as the ensuing free throw, extended the margin to 78-57 with 5:11 to play.

Leading by 15, Rhino Hernandez found Nwaobi for a three-point shot. Nwaobi hit two more free throws for an 85-65 margin. York continued to hit free throws in the final 90 seconds en route to the victory.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was led by Dixon's 27-point effort. Thorpe Jr., posted 20 points and 13 rebounds for a double-double. Nwaobi added 16 points while Bennett chipped in 13. He also added seven rebounds. Hernandez totaled five points, five boards and four assists.

For the game, York hit 30-of-59 from the floor, including 10-of-20 from the three-point stripe. The Panthers buried 18-of-22 from the charity stripe. York held a 42-35 edge on the glass. The home squad dished out 15 assists and scored 14 points of 10 turnovers.
