Panthers Take Down Falcons In Home Finale

YORK, Neb. – The York University men's basketball team recorded a 63-59 victory over Friends University Wednesday evening in the home finale.

The Panthers are now 11-16 overall, including 9-12 in league play.

Head coach Tree Burks' team was paced by Andrew Bennett's 15-point, 12-rebound double-double effort. Dwight Glover notched 14 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double while DJ Leaks tallied 11 points, four rebounds and three steals. Trevon Dennis accounted for seven points and five boards.

Two Bennett free throws at the 16:30 mark gave the home team a 9-5 edge. Up 15-11, Salvador Fernandez buried a three-ball. DJ Leaks converted a lay-up and a jumper to go up 22-11 with 11:17 to play in the half. A pair of charity tosses from Devin Carroll and two from Bennett pushed the lead to 12, 28-16, with 4:48 to go in the half. However, the Falcons trimmed the deficit to nine, 35-26 with a lay-up with 24 seconds to go in the period.

Leading 41-40, Dennis took a pass from Glover and nailed a three-ball. Glover converted a three-point play with 12:36 to go for a 47-40 advantage. Friends University managed to take a lead and the two went back-and-forth for much of the second half.

Trailing 57-55, Leaks buried a jumper. Jaden Henderson found Bennett for a basket at the 4:42 mark for a two-point edge.

The Falcons tied the game at 59-59 with 4:13 to play but York's stellar defense kept the visitors off the board the rest of the way.

Bennett hit a pair of free throws with 3:51 to play for what turned out to be all the points the home team would need. Glover hit a free throw to make it a three-point game with 10 seconds remaining. Leaks hit a free throw with three seconds remaining for the final margin.

For the game, York hit 20-of-51 from the floor (39.2 percent). The team buried 19-of-28 from the charity stripe (67.9 percent). The Panthers outrebounded the Falcons 40-35 and maintained the lead for just over 36 minutes. Burks' squad held a 12-6 edge in second-chance points.

The Panthers conclude the regular season Saturday at Kansas Wesleyan. Tip-off is slated for 8p.m. Live stats and video will be available at Yorkpanthers.com.
