HANNIBAL, Mo. – After finishing the second game of Friday's doubleheader with a 9-8 loss, the York University baseball team closed out the series with a 12-1 win at Hannibal-LaGrange Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers are now 6-8 on the season.
York broke things open with a seven-run first inning and never looked back.
Secundino Morales pushed
Austin Grant to second with a base hit.
Cesar Galvan drove in Grant for a 1-0 lead. Moments later,
Daniel Polo blasted a three-run homer, giving the visitors a 4-0 advantage.
A walk to
Trevor Peterson and hit batsman put two on for
Ian Heck, who promptly roped a single to center field to plate Peterson. Morales doubled home Romero and Heck to close out the scoring in the frame.
James McCown did not need additional help as he continued his stellar pitching performance against the home team.
Leading 7-0 in the fourth, the Panthers struck again – this time with four runs.
Nicholas DeMonte registered a two-run homer, driving in Heck. A Morales double drove in Grant, who had reached on a single. A sacrifice fly from Galvan drove in Morales for the seven-run advantage.
Up 11-1 going into the seventh inning, York closed out the scoring when Heck singled in Peterson, who had reached on a double to lead off the inning.
For the game, Heck turned in a four-of-five performance at the plate. He had two RBI and scored twice. Morales garnered three hits, three RBI and scored twice. Polo had three hits and drove in three. Grant and DeMonte had two hits apiece. DeMonte and Galvan each drove in two while Grant and Peterson scored twice apiece.
On the mound, McCown got the victory after tossing five strong innings. He had six strikeouts and gave up just two walks and six hits.
Sam Maudsley registered two strikeouts to close the game over two frames.
